A magical time: About being a pregnant entrepreneur

The first thing people told me when I found out I was pregnant was: “It’s such a magical time”. And it is!. I just wish they would’ve also told me how hard it was going to be.
Being an entrepreneur is hard. Being pregnant is hard. Being pregnant entrepreneur is REALLY DOUBLE FREAKING hard. And here are my top 4 reasons why.
1.- Morning sickness should be called a ‘three-months-long hangover’
You have worked so hard to get where you are. You want to take the best care of your growing baby. You want to live up to the standard of all the brave women before you who fought for equality and against discrimination when they heard “You’re just going to get pregnant at some point and quit”, and YOU are not a quitter!
But having to deal with clients, be productive, send emails, think of strategies, be on top of your social media, finances whilst having the worst-non-stop hangover for 90 consecutive days (when you don’t know if you’re hungry or want to throw up or sleep or all of the above) is maybe one of the hardest things I have done. EVER. (Here’s where you think: “I thought this was supposed to be a magical time”).
Tip: If you are one of the lucky mums-to-be that suffer from the three-months-long hangover, try to keep a snack with you at all times (you’ll discover which one works for you, for me was pretzels) and a beverage high in electrolytes :)
2.- Baby brain is a REAL THING
Even though we still don’t know what causes it, maybe the hormones or the excitement, you will start to do crazy things. Like forgetting appointments, putting your sunglasses in the fridge or leaving your keys inside your still running car. Don’t worry, the good thing is that most of the times you’ll laugh about it (except for that time that you let your camera off the tripod and forgot to hold it so it hit the ground). It is such a common thing that you’ll find that most people will have compassion over your craziness.
Tip: Write everything down! Carry a notepad with you and write conversations, appointments and everything down you think you’ll not forget.. Because you will! It also helps to let people know that you are having baby brain so that they can expect you to erase from your memory whatever important thing they just said.
3.- Everything is just so much HARDER
I used to be one of those people that could do eleven million things at the same time, handle 6 projects, going rock climbing for 4 hours, make dinner, read 2 books at a time, take good care of my husband (who also takes care of me) and of my dog, go for a run, do yoga and still find time and energy to watch a bit of Netflix here and there.
But, after getting pregnant I consider myself an absolute winner if I can tie my shoes and work for a full afternoon without napping on the same day, Yeeww. Everything just requires so much more effort. Focusing is harder, exercising scares me (specially during the third trimester) and actually giving a F#&* is an everyday struggle.
Tip: Slow down. That was MY lesson. Say no, prioritise, go for swims in the ocean (if you can, when you can, even if you do a couple of laps you’ll feel so much better. But make sure you have time to nap afterwards) and use your energy wisely. If you need to hire someone to help you out, do it. It is totally worth it. That way you can keep your clients happy without compromising your health or your baby’s.
4.- Don’t miss it
Ok, this is not a struggle, but a reminder. Despite all of the things that makes being pregnant a challenge, it is beautiful. Feeling your baby moving inside you makes all of it worth it and will inspire you to find a way of making things work. We’ve made great sacrifices to get where we are and we’ll probably need to make many more, so make adjustments to your life and business that works FOR YOU and whatever you do, make time to enjoy your pregnancy! After all, it is such a magical time!
